BTTF4 treatment accepted?
Truth or Fan-Fiction?
Got an interesting email this morning from our friends over at Cinema Confidential, who received a scoop over the weekend from a regular scooper to their site. Their anonymous scooper claims that Ed Solomon has already turned in his treatments to Universal, and that they have already given BTTF4 the greenlight for development. Naturally, we have no way to confirm or debunk what this scooper has reported at this time, but it all sounds too far fetched to us. You can make up your own mind on this one...
Back to the Future Part 4 has recieved the go-ahead from Universal. They accepted the first of Ed Solomon's treatments for the two sequels and have decided to begin work.
I have no info, as yet, as to who will be directing, but my friend in the industry says that Bob Zemeckis has way too much on his plate at the minute for any involvment. It is more likely that we will see either Steven Spielberg (He believes MIB to be his best Exec role (written by Solomon) and wants more involvment with Solomon's projects.) direct, yes. Or we might see BTTF's writer/screenwriter - Bob Gale directing with Spielberg and Solomon taking a back seat. My friend actually fancies Spielberg to direct as Gale is currently in developement with his first feature directing - Interstate 60 - starring 'The Doc' Christopher Lloyd.
We seriously doubt the validity of this report, and until we get more information, we will chalk this one up as nothing more than a rumor. There are simply too many contradictions to previous reports, with no factual basis to back up these claims. First of all, if we're to believe our industry scooper (which we do, by the way), the treatments aren't due to be turned in for another two weeks to Universal. And you can bet a case of plutonium pellets that there is no chance in the entire space-time continuum that Steven Spielberg will ever direct a BTTF film. With Robert Zemeckis' development slate growing by the week, Bob Gale really is the most probable director for the two sequels. However, that's not news to anyone who's been following reports on this site, as we've speculated that all along. Interstate 60 is still listed in active development, as it has been for nearly a year now with no production beginning date in sight.
Gale's involvement in that project wouldn't knock him out of the running for directorial duties on BTTF4 anyway the project would have to wait for Interstate 60 to wrap to free up Christopher Lloyd's schedule.
If there's a shred of truth anywhere in this report, it could be that Universal may have already decided they're going to do the film(s) before seeing the treatments. Hopefully, our Hollywood insider will have more news for us later on this month as they indicated last month. Stay tuned...
On a different note, it is expected that somewhere across this country today, someone will buy a movie ticket to Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace that will knock Back to the Future down another notch to #24 on the list of the Top Domestic Films of All Time.
